How Much Does a Drone Inspection Cost?
Common pricing models — hourly, project, day, area and value-based — and the scope details that move the price.
Typical pricing models
Providers price inspection work by the hour, by the project, by the day, by area or length (acres, MW, km of line or pipeline) or by asset (per turbine, per tower, per tank). Commonly cited US ranges are roughly $150–$700 per hour and $300–$5,000 or more per project, with day rates for broader drone work around $1,000–$3,000. Specialist, enterprise or value-based work can sit well above these figures. Treat these as indicative only and compare like-for-like quotes.
What drives the price
Asset type and quantity, sensors (zoom RGB, radiometric thermal, LiDAR, optical gas imaging), operating environment (energised, offshore, confined space, hazardous atmosphere), regulatory permissions such as BVLOS, mobilisation distance, shutdown windows, engineering or thermography review, data processing and the format or system the output must be delivered into.
Watch for exclusions
Quotes often differ because of what is left out: travel and accommodation, standby for weather, re-flights, data processing, defect classification, professional review, data hosting and integration. Ask every provider to list inclusions and exclusions.
Recurring programmes
Utilities and asset owners with many sites often agree annual or multi-year programmes. Ask for unit rates, mobilisation fees, minimum volumes and how emergency call-outs are charged.
